Question: Hi. My son sometimes widens his eyes. And in a separate occasion sometimes looking upward to the left sometimes right but usually left. The widening and the looking to the l/r is separate and not at the same time. My son is 3. He has done eeg when he was 2 all came back to normal, first one was 30 mins then 12hrs just to make sure but everything came back normal. He had his eyes checked and it was normal as well. He doesnt have hearing problems but was diagnosed speech delay. He has been learning a few more words. He is a boy btw. What do you think is the problem? He does it in no specific time. There’s days without doing the thing and there are days that he does it. Sometimes when he is sleepy. There were a long period of time i didnt see him do it like for months.. but then it came back but he does it a few timesa week or so. He also had his heart checked when he was one yrs old cause he had a hole during birth and everything was normal. I dont know why he keeps on doing this. I dont want to give him meds for seizure if the eeg is normal. Im not even sure if its really seizure. when my son had eeg that was the time he had those upward thingy thing. the neurologist we talked to said that he doesnt see the need for the MRI. he doesnt drool or anything. i feel like he knows whats happening in his surrounding too because whenever i look at him, he looks at me straight too. if it's not seizures, what could it be? whenever he would widen his eyes, he's either walking or watching youtube. he doesnt stop or freeze or anything.

Brief Answer:
May be a variation of development. Absence seizures to be excluded also.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your query here at "Ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your query.

These issues that you are reporting about your 3 years old son may not be linked to any underlying cause, and to be accepted as normal variations of development.

But, before to be sure about this, a possible condition such as absence seizures, should be excluded by examinations and tests.

For this purpose, it is necessary an evaluation by a Pediatrician specialized in Neurology, an EEG, and a brain MRI.

If these evaluations will not support absence seizures, we can be sure that there is no underlying condition that is causing such issues.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Hi Is this normal when he looks upwards left/right when he falls asleep? I seem to notice it sometimes. and whenever there's soap in his eyes. My son was in a hammock and he fell asleep then that's when I saw it. whenever I call his name he looks at me and I try to arrange his pillow to see if he has knowledge of what's going on. he seems so. then he falls to sleep right back again.

I read this online: "a newborn's eyes often wander or cross -- or even roll back in her head as she's falling asleep, leaving only the whites visible." My 3 year old son does this. IS this normal?

Brief Answer:
It's a normal thing in the first stages of sleep.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

This is a normal thing during the first stages of sleep and is a common finding not only in the newborn.

Eyes movement during the first stages of sleep is not caused by any underlying cause.

Hope this helps.

Take care.

is it also normal when I scold my son, or say no in a strong speaking voice that he does that upward thing with his eyes sometimes widens his eyes as well? I always try to point my finger in between his eyes to see if he has knowledge of whats going on in his environment and he does. what he do is, when i do this, he shuts his eyes then look at me afterwards.

Brief Answer:
No underlying cause for these reactions.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

All these reactions are normal and don't relate to any underlying conditions.

If you raise your voice most likely the reaction of your son is linked with fear.

Hope this helps.

Take care
