Question: Hi,

My wife has gastric problem(More frequent burps and some times vomitings as well when burps are more). Consulted surgical gastro doctor and doctor has prescribed medicines Prodep 20 mg and Baclofien 10 mg . We used the medicine for around 1.5 month.

From last three days, she missed to take the prodep 20 mg medicine. Now she is getting more and more sleepyness. So she is saying she will not take that medicine. Is it because of abruptly stopping the medicine ? Actually doctor has suggested to continue the medicine for another 2 months but we just missed to take the medicine for 3 days.

So I have following questions.
1) Is it expected to get such symptoms when we stop the prodep 20 mg medicine ? If she continues the medicine again, the symptoms will go away ?
2) Is the medicine prodep 20 mg safe ? Is it safe to take the medicine for long duration such as 2 or 3 months ?
3) What is the procedure to stop the medicine ?

Brief Answer:
prodep is not an exclusive gastro drug, has multiple indications.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query and here is my advise.

* The Prodep 20 mg is a selective serotonin re uptake inhibitor which increases the
serotonin level in the brain and helpful in variety of clinical conditions as obsessive
compulsive disorder, panic attack, eating disorder, premenstrual dysmorphic disorder
and others.

* The sleepiness is due to sudden stoppage of the drug causing withdrawal symptoms.

* As there is unwillingness of her to consume the same drug, I recommend to consult
her doctor again to start in lower dose or ask to change the molecule keeping in mind
her over all symptoms and clinical need.

* Starting again the same medicine may improve the current condition in some instance,
but again the same will repeat after a period of time, so it is not advisable.

* The medicine is safe when used under medical supervision for particular duration of
period.

* The procedure to stop medication is again under medical supervision with dose
tapering.

* Over and above your queries, my suggestions for her best recovery ( as I believe to
cure from the root cause, rather than suppressing the symptoms only )

- precise diet care
- more moral support than medicines
- meditations, YOGA, regular walk in fresh air
- sound regular sleep
- avoidance of stress, anxiety of all types
- control of blood sugar, cholesterol levels, body weight
- more involvement in likelihood activities

Wish her best recovery and health.
Do feel free to discuss further regarding the same.
