Hello, and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor'

Thanks for posting your query.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. It would be much easier for me if you could attach your reports so that I could have an over all idea.

Usually excess of vitamin B12 and folic acid are excreted in urine. Some condition such as blood disorders, severe liver disease, diabetes, heart failure or obesity then they can have an increased vitamin B12 level. Some medicines such as Estrogens, vitamin C or vitamin A can also cause high B12 levels.

Daily intake of multivitamin can also cause high levels. It is advised to take multivitamins for a month and take a break for 2 or 3 months. I would suggest you stop your multivitamins for a month or 2 and then check your levels.

I hope this answered your query. Please feel free to discuss further if any.

Hello,

I wanted to know if I should take any extra supplements besides my multivitamin just in case I could have Deficiencies. My doctor said most people are low on Vitamin D and Vitamin B12, so she tested. My vitamin D results came back fine at 36 and the B12 and folic acid high. The only symptom I have is being tired more than usual and not sure if its related, but left sided pain that wraps around to my back on and off. Thank you

Hi,

Okay, as your vitamin levels are good. You can stop multivitamins for 3 months. I would suggest you to drink adequate water around 3 to 4 liters per day. You can use some over the counter antacids for a week or two. Sometimes gastritis also can cause tiredness and pain.

If your tiredness and pain is persisting it is best to get your blood sugar, and blood pressure levels checked. Doing a basic blood work up and a spine X-Ray or MRI to rule out any nerve compression.

I hope this answered your query. Please feel free to discuss further if any.
