Brief Answer:
Side effects of budesanide inhaler
Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr. Wagner and welcome to Ask a Doctor. I have read your query and here is my advice.
First I wish to ask some questions.
Why did your doctor prescribe budesonide? Is it the Inhaler? How often? How many times a day?
Are you to take any other medicines?
I shall give you time to respond.

He prescribed it for IgA nephritis. The other option would be prednisone for 6 months which I absolutely do not want to do because of the severe side affects. He hasn't told me yet how many times a day and if its inhaler. Would that make a difference to the side affects? It's not something I'm taking for a week. It's a 6 month period.
Thank you
Thank you
Brief Answer:
response to additional material from patient
Detailed Answer:
Mr. Wagner: I apologize for just now replying to you, but I was not aware that you had provided additional information until today.
In a medical study from Sweden patients with IgA nephritis were treated for six months by mouth with what is known as "targeted release" of budesonide. This had a significant effect on lowering urine protein excretion. Protein in the urine is a major risk for progression of IgA nephritis.
This targeted release is designed to release budesonide in the GI tract where there is immune tissue. Budesonide reduces the immune response which improves the course of the IgA nephritis.
By not acting throughout the body, side effects of this steroid are minimized. Side effects of budesonide include nausea, heartburn, headache, bruising, and thinning of skin. There are some doctors who feel that patients with IgA nephritis ought to be treated for longer than 6 months.
I hope you see my response as soon as possible. If you do not have any clarifications to ask, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish you good health.
