Question: Hi, a few weeks ago I had a colonoscopy and an upper endoscopy. Since then, I have been feeling lower left side, pelvic pain, and upper left side abdominal pain. Also lots of anxiety and nausea. I asked my doctor and she said the colonoscopy prep flushed out the good bacteria and I need to take probiotics. What do you think? Anything serious? I am also having a lot of lower back pain. I have talked to my doctor over the phone but not seen her in person.

Brief Answer:
Go for a Complete blood count and if possible a stool culture test.(If these symptoms and type of pain is new in nature post colonoscopy).
For me it could be an ongoing infection inside your intestines.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic,
Have gone through your query in details,
When ever a outside instrument is inserted in body there are chances that it may carry with it some harmful bacterias.Though sterilization is done yet nothing is 100% secure in medical science.
Pain and nausea are suggestive of some on going infection inside the gut.Its already been weeks and you are already taking probiotics digestive enzymes so in short i don't feel depleted gut flora is a explaination in your case.
For me its related to natural gut flora and loss in flora due to colonoscopy preperation.
I would suggest you to go for a test called complete blood count any acute ongoing infection would be reflected by rise in neutrophils and chronic would be reflected as elevated lymphocytes.
Again as you said pain is radiating to back also so there are chances of possible ongoing infection. You are already taking probiotics etc so if you were my patient i would have suspected an ongoing infection.
I would suggest you to go for this test to be sure that something serious is not going on.This will take hardly 10 minutes at any lab.
Follow up with reports.
Waiting.

Thanks for the feedback. I do however want to say that I am only recently starting to take the probiotic and digestive enzymes. I started them on October 12 (Friday). Would you still recommend me going in for those tests or should I still wait? And do I need to talk to my primary care doctor for those tests or just walk in? And where can I get this test done?

Detailed Answer:
Hello again'
See in 95% of cases post colonoscopy a patient is fit and fine after 24 hours. Probiotics etc are required in a very few patient that too for hardly 2-3 days.
My recommendation-Get at least a complete blood count done(5 minute one pinch and my fear of infection is gone).
CBC is a basic test however depends on the rules and local regulation of the medical authorities. In most part of world this basic test could be done by a patient for self. Or you may take a print out of this thread(Though its just a suggestion site yet your lab technician would not create a fuss for doing such a normal test after going through explaination).
You can get this test done at any nearest pathological centre or a primary care centre. This is one of the most basic test of blood.
Talking to your primary doctor is always a good idea.

Thank you and follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
As said earlier reports are normal and very likely the issue is related to you depletion of the good flora of the gut. However, as there is lymphadenopathy also a consultation with oncologist can be done.
Thanks!
