Question: Hi all,

My daughter is 2years 3months.

She falls sick very quickly. She used to have cold, cough, fever at least once a month here in XXXXXXX
Also, she is currently producing her pre-molar and molar teeth.

After she turned 2 on XXXXXXX 30th, she had been falling sick very frequently. In July- Aug, it was at a gap of 1 week or so.

We were in XXXXXXX Then we travelled to XXXXXXX Before going to XXXXXXX she got it 3 times within 6 weeks, on the final one, she was given antibiotics.

In XXXXXXX she was Fine for 3 weeks or more. But then she caught it again. Went on antibiotics and got ok. We came back to XXXXXXX

Again after 2-3 weeks or 10 days or so, she has now got cold and little cough again. Had given ger Wikoryl and Livocope since last 3-4 days.

After 7-8 months of age, her weight was always on a lower side. although, she is a very hyper active child. So everyone used to suggest, it is fine.

But on my request, I got few immunity boosters, but after giving them for 4-5 times, she falls sick so i stopped giving that.

Even After asking specialists around about her weight and falling sick so frequently, I still have not found any relevant cure and answers.

Looking forward to genuine help and suggestions on this:
Is this kind of falling sick for kids normal? (as some of the people tell me)
or Is it any matter of concern?
Do I need to give her any extra vitamins or immunity boosters etc?

Brief Answer:
Get her thoroughly evaluated by a pediatrician/pediatric pulmonologist

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for choosing this platform

I have gone through the query and do understand your concern. Being a father it is really difficult to manage such a condition where the child becomes sick very frequently.
Although cold and cough is very common in this age but this should not be too frequent and there should not be associated symptoms of lower respiratory tract involvement like fast breathing, chest I drawing or noisy whistle like/crackling sound.
Frequent lower respiratory tract involvement (a form of pneumonia)should be thoroughly evaluated even if it is occurring more than 4 times in a year.
Now this lower respiratory involvement can be due to bacterial infection, viral infection or due to allergy.
Viral and bacterial infection usually accompanies with fever and thus helps in differentiating it from an allergic one. Please let me know if there are features of distress or whether each episode is associated with fever.
Allergic airway problem is very common in this age and particularly if you are residing in metropolitan City. An exact allergen is difficult to find but chances are furthermore if any other family member is having allergic skin or Airway disorder like asthma.
Also please let me know if she needs nebulization during her illness as this also goes in favor of an allergic disorder.
Bacterial infection in such frequency is unusual and if it occurs the severity will be very high.
So I don't think each time that antibiotic use is justified.
Frequent allergic, bacterial or viral respiratory issues can be due to some immunological disorder like deficiency of immunoglobulin or increased immunoglobulin E activity.
Even normally frequent respiratory symptoms can be there as immunity in this age is comparatively low and as they grow it gets better.
Unless the immunodeficiency is proven there is no role of immune-related treatment and again I don't find any justification in giving immunity booster kind of material.
I suggest you consult a pediatric pulmonologist for opinion and discuss with him in detail regarding the possibilities.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more doubts.

Almost each episode is associated with Fever. Especially with lot of weather changes like when it becomes cold all of sudden or starts raining (like it is in bangalore).

She is more happy with the family in XXXXXXX but here i think she sometimes feel lonely as well.
Also, now she shows dis-interest in going to day care as well.

We dont give her any nebulization but yes, we do give her steam at home sometimes like twice or thrice.

Brief Answer:
Most likely it is allergic and viral only

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am really very sorry for delayed reply.
As described by you it appears to be due to some allergy and viral infection(as most of the time it associated with fever).
I won't get worried as the episodes are not associated with breathing difficulty or noisy sound.
Investigation like immunoglobulin E level in blood to rule out immunological allergic cause may be needed after discussion with your pediatrician
Antiallergic medication like combination of montelukast and levocetrizine for prolonged duration may help in prevention of recurrence.

Hi

No worries for late reply.
Thanks to God, that there is no need to worry. But is this really ok to occur so frequently that most of the times we end up giving her antibiotics to rule out root cause ??????

Last week, I had stopped giving her wikoryl and livcet after 5 days, but in last 2 days again runny nose was there and i think throat ache started yesterday because she has stopped eating and became even more irritated.
So today i started giving her novamox as well with wikoryl and lovcet again after consulting with doctor here.

Is this really fine that she has to be given some medication again and again after a gap of 10 days or so??

or rather to put in other words---
Is this really ok that she gets these allergic or viral infections again and again so frequently like once or twice a month?????

If not, then what is the permanent solution for this??
What can i really do to eliminate these health issues from my daughter's life?

Really looking forward to your suggestion!

Thanks a lot XXXXXXX

Also, I forgot to mention currently she is producing her end-of-the-jaw teeth particularly molars and pre-molars, due to which i think sometimes she has headache also.
Does this have anything to do with these episodes of falling sick due to cold, cough, fever?

Brief Answer:
Get few tests like blood Immunoglobulin E level done

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I can understand your concern. Frequent respiratory illness is not so uncommon in preschool or school going age. It improves with increasing age.
I would again tell you that no need to worry if there is no associated breathing difficulty. Throat pain can be due to tonsillar infection. Again it may be viral or bacterial and viral much more common. I don't think that antibiotic is needed each time unless fever is prolonged or there is proven evidence of bacterial infection.
Mild headache is common due to fever itself or sometimes due to congestion.
Sometimes frequent respiratory illness can be due to allergy leading to high immunoglobulin E level and if detected then giving long term antiallergic like montelukast with cetrizine combination helps.
I don't think that this cough, cold or fever is anyhow related to teeth eruption.
