Hi, Doctor. Appox 3 Months Ago I Had A Corto

Question: Hi, doctor. Appox 3 months ago I had a corto injection into my right knee with no side effects and injection went smoothly. Yesterday, my orthopedic surgeon decided to do same injection but only into the left knee. This was quite different than the first inasmuch it hurt (even though cold was sprayed on area) but most significant was toward end of injection, it was really painful as I felt the needle actually moving or penetrating a muscle or a tendon. Immediately after injection and still ongoing, there is soreness at injection site which is normal but also a deep constant uncomfortable throbbing several inches above the side of the knee (feels like in the groin/thigh muscle) This throbbing is not exacerbated by walking on it but throbs just sitting in a chair. Just wondering what this could be and how to resolve it. Thanks so much for your help.

Brief Answer:
Cold compress will help you. Do not massage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Mild pain and throbbing sensation is a common finding after an intra articular steroid injection.
The mild throbbing usually subsides on its own in next 2-3 days . But to speed up the recovery you can do a cold compress for two days for any local swelling to subside. Do not apply any gel or massage the area. After two days doing a hot compress will help. You can avoid doing any stressful activities of the knee for an early recovery.
In case the swelling increases or redness and extreme pain appears then do consult your orthopedician for a direct examination.
I hope this answers your query.

Hi, doctor. I have been putting ice on knee but it still has some light throbbing. Unlike the other knee injection, this one feels very sore under and alongside the injection site and a little sore on the thigh. And as I mentioned, with this one, I did feel him hit a tendon or muscle. This was done 3 days ago. I see no swelling, redness, or extreme pain but did notice this injection site is larger and more noticable than the prior injection. Does this sound normal or possibly a tendon or muscle was nicked in the injection process?

Brief Answer:
This will heal gradually.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Even if a muscle or tendon has been pricked by a needle, it will gradually heal on its own. There is nothing to worry. As 3 days have gone already, you can do a hot compress now and let it heal on its own.
Regards.
