Question: Hi doctor:

Can you help me understand how ADD can present as other mental health disorders? I have had a few doctors suggest that anxiety, bipolar symptoms, racing persecuted thoughts are from ADD. At times stimulants seem to really put me right but eventually they tend to make me feel angry and extremely detached.

Hi, thanks for using ask a doctor service

I am sorry for replying late as I was travelling.

ADD or Attention Deficit Disorder is seen in a number of adults. In a lot of situations this is confused with bipolar disorder or even sometimes atypical depression.

In adult ADD inattention, impulsivity etc symptoms can present in a number of other psychiatric issues. Bipolar disorder and Adult ADD have a lot of common symptoms.

Tolerance to stimulants develops rapidly and this could be the reason for occasional anger, detached feelings. This could be avoided by adjusting the drug doses and drug holidays.

Thanks.
