Hi Doctor, My Son Is 16 Months Old And We
Question: Hi doctor,
My son is 16 months old and we were taking him on a walk. On the way home we were pushing him down my avenue and the sun was facing his direction. For about 30 seconds the sun was is his eyes causing him to start squinting and rubbing his eyes repeatedly. Do you think any damage was done to his eyes? He seems fine and acting normal right now, but what i have read on google if there was any damage to his retina causes from the Sun, he wouldn’t fee pain because there is no pain receptors. Could that cause retina damage???Please answer me fast, I’m very nervous and have lots of anxiety since my son was born. The time was approximately 6 pm when this occurred, we live in NYC.

There is no sun burn to retina in such situation as there adequate defences in the body to deal with a situation like this. These defences are narrowing of pupil and palpebral apertures to reduce the amount of light entering the retina. What you have heard of retinal burn is during eclipse where a strongly dark adapted eye is suddenly exposed to bright XXXXXXX ring of solar eclipse.
