Question: Hi, for migranes occurring every two weeks, my wife has been on a daily dose o 60mg propranolol for two months and hasn't had a single migraine until today. She caught a bad cold and took robitussin XXXXXXX strength cold medicine but with Destromethorphan. She got a bad migrane this afternoon and it is still bad. The CVS pharmacist told her to stop the cold medicine, which she did this morning, after three doses. The migrane started later in the day. The pharmacist said he believes the migrane was caused by the interference of the Dextromethorphan with the propranolol. She now has taken a different cold pill based on the pharmacist's advice. It is cold & flue HBP, containing Acetaminophen Maleate, and a bunch of "inactive" ingredients. The PHARMACIST SAID IT WAS OK TO TAKE HER MIGRANE PILL- ELETRIPTAN AND THE COLD PILL AND THE REGULAR DOSE OF PROPRANOLOL. Just being careful on this combination. She typically shuns all pills, except the recent propranolol.
Is this combo ok? Thanks, XXXXXXX Nadeau

Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor"

I have gone through your query and can certainly understand your concern,

Yes, she can take the migraine pill- ELETRIPTAN along with the regular dose of Propranolol, with the new cold pill as these are not found to cause any interaction side effects.

I hope this helps,

Please feel free to discuss further,
