Question: Hi, for the past few months my stools look slimmer and smaller and I think that in the past months they have never really been brown.I recently had a blood count and all seems normal but eosinophils are at 0.93, lymphocytes at 4.01, hs crp at 12.19 and platelets at 407. I did have inflamed gums and a skin rash on the fingers (probably eczema, still have it) at that time and even up to now.

I start being very scared that I have colon cancer and that it is advanced. Liver seems to be working fine by blood work, no fatigue, not feeling bloated or unwell.

It is just the stools seeems off, lighter, thinner, smaller. Within the past two years I have had cases when I could see blood in the stool, usually this also cause a burning sensation and a feeling like scratching in the anus but it was not consant and it has not happened in the past months. Once or twice within the past 12 months I also had the sensation I wanted to go to the toilet but could not pass anything. How concerned would you be for cancer? If cancered had advanced would this mean thin stool without blood or should it have blood? Should I go after a colonoscopy? Should i be scared? I have convinced myself I have advanced colon cancer. Female, age 31

Brief Answer:
Colon cancer is very unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
Colon or rectal cancer are extremely rare at this stage(colon cancer at a younger age are seen generally in hereditary cancer syndromes only). More over your symptoms are not consistent with colonic cancer.
Unwanted anxiety make your symptoms worse,
As of now you can take over the counter available laxatives for smooth bowel movements. Include more fruits and vegetables to your diet.
If symptoms persists you can opt for a colonoscopy.
Thanks

Hi Doctor,

thank you very much for the answer. Both my grandfathers died of cancer, one from lungs and one from colon (complications because of surgery). My grandmos on the other hand are bulls so I want to think i got their genes :)

Would that be more alarming? My mom and uncle have both been having colonoscopies regularly and they are both fine. Also cousins, parents and siblings are all fine.

I more conserned because of the fact that it seems like my stool is not brown anymore, i guess sometimes it could be but usually it is lighter. Also what could cause it to be smaller and thinner? Sometimes i feel like there might be some issue with the anus and not so much in the colon.

Also, I know that google is the worst thing you can do but i have seen that thin stool is considered one of the symptoms is it not? What sympotms would be more consistent with colon cancer?

I know it is very unlikely, but this recent blood work made me paranoid. Moreover because the stool is lighter in colour I have convinced myself i might have some liver or pancreatic issues. When you listen about these stories of all these people getting ill it is so hard not to worry.

Again, thank you so mcuh for your answer.

Brief Answer:
It is unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Familial colon cancer affect younger individuals and multiple generation will be affected.
In your case it is unlikely a familial cancer.
Colon cancer is extremely rare at this age.
The symptoms of cancer colon are, blood in stool, difficulty in passing stool etc. There may be associated loss of weight as well.
If you are very much worried, a colonoscopy may be done for reassurance.
As of now you can try a course of laxatives.
Thanks
