Question: Hi, my baby is almost 2 months old (born on 10/nov 20). Over the last week or so, she has become very cranky. She keeps looking for her finger to suck to self soothe but is too small to aim correctly and keep it in there. The elders in the family are against her sucking her thumbs but I do not want to forcibly pull it out since it is a natural tendency. Can I offer her a pacifier in the meanwhile? Is it habit forming?

Brief Answer:
Better leave it alone

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome to Ask A Doctor service

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

But, all the issues mentioned here (a bit crankiness and thumb sucking) can be considered absolutely normal for young babies. Thumb sucking is a normal developmental milestone, and part of their self exploratory behaviour. Offering a pacifier is not good for two reasons- firstly, this will not stop baby from sucking thumb. Secondly, regular pacifier sucking can cause nipple confusion and interfere with proper latching while breast feeding. Once in a while, it wont be an issue, but never recommended to be a regular practice.

What is more important is to convince family members that, this is an absolutely normal thing needing no intervention. If you find it difficult to convince, you can take them along with you during next visit to your pediatrician.

I hope this answer will help
