Brief Answer:
Suggestions to treat glandular fever are explained below in details.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I understand your concern.

Glandular fever is a viral infection.

I recommend to use painkillers such as Ibuprofen 400 mg three times a day.

In some cases a bacterial infection can overlies a sore throat.

A physical examination is needed to confirm is there is a presence of a bacterial infection.

In this case antibiotics are needed.

I may recommend Augmentin 625 mg twice a day.

I also recommend rest and drinking a lot of liquids.
I suggest gargling with salty water to help with the sore throat.

The symptoms may need up to three weeks to go away.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Most of what you say she is now over, it is the lingering pain from below the waist that is absolute agony, I wondered after reading the various reports that the blood could be not carrying enough oxygen that could be making the muscles have pain. She has had this illness for over a month now and some of the symptoms have now passed and in the last 24 hours can eat some solid food but still taking liquid meals as well. Painkillers seem to make no difference to the pain she is getting.

Brief Answer:
I recommend a muscle relaxant for the muscle pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

I understand your concern.

As I mentioned above the glandular fever is a viral infection and will run its course.

I may suggest to use a muscle relaxant for the muscle pain such as Baclofen three times a day.

Warm showers may also be very helpful.

The infection usually lasts three weeks, but tiredness and muscle pain can persist for several more weeks.

In fact, it may take a few months before the patients feel completely well.

If the pain is persists, you may also go in the emergency room for proper pain management.

Hope it helps.

Take care dear,

Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi
