Hi, My Mum (62) Is Suffering From Hyperacidity , Constipation
Recently I visited another endocrinologist and he frowned upon that my mum is taking medicine with Pioglitazone as it may increase chance of bone damage.
Her menopause has happened 12 years back and after DEXA test it's found that some parts of her bone framework has got osteoporosis. The new doctor (endocrinologist) wants to start treatment for that. And he has suggested to stop Gluconorm PG1 and replace it with Amaryl M2.
My previous doctor (diabetologist) doesn't agree to change. What shall I do? Please suggest. It's quite urgent.
I would suggest you to start tablet Amaryl M2 with caution...
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your query and here is my advice.
In few clinical studies, it is seen that there is increased risk of bone fracture in women while on tablet pioglitazone still it is a rare side effect. But tablet pioglitazone is effective in controlling glycemic and lipid parameters.
Tablet Amaryl M2 contains 2 mg of tablet glimepiride which may cause increased risk of hypoglycemia i e low blood sugar levels.
As DEXA scan showed osteoporosis and after considering all benefit : risk ratio, if I would be your physician than I would suggest you to stop tablet pioglitazone and check calcium level after consultation.
After starting tablet Amaryl M2 kindly do blood sugar monitoring at least three times a day before meals. Take balanced diabetic diet.
Along with that kindly watch for hypoglycemia symptoms like sweating, rapid pulse rate, shivering, severe hunger.
Hope I have answered your query and let me know if I can assist you further...
