Question: Hi my name is XXXXXXX Gallup and I am not feeling well. For the past few days I have a very bad cough and am bringing up dark yellow junk and can barely talk. (This does not work well with my job as a receptionist) My chest hurts and I am very tired. I am very susceptible to bronchitis and I am pretty sure this is what is going on. I have some Benzonatate left from the last time I had this and have been taking that. I am wondering if there is any way I can get an antibiotic called in to my pharmacy so that I can get through this,

Brief Answer:
No, antibiotics are not over the counter.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on 'Ask A Doctor' forum.
I can understand your concern.

By your history and description, a possibility of either lung infection or bronchitis is more likely.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done a clinical examination of the respiratory system, chest X-ray and PFT (Pulmonary Function Test).

PFT will not only diagnose bronchitis but it will also tell you about the severity of the disease and treatment is based on severity only.

You will need inhaled bronchodilators and antibiotics.

Since both of them are prescribed medications, you need a doctor's prescription for them.
They are not available OTC (over the counter).

Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.

Wish you good health.
Thanks

I thought that I was talking to a doctor and when excellus introduced WebMD to us we were told you can call in scripts ... I know other employees who have done this and gotten scripts called in for them. My Dr retired last December & I currently do not have one that is why I tried this.

Sorry to say but this is an online forum to guide you further.

I can suggest you the relevant few antibiotics name, either one of which you can take i.e. Azithromycin (500mg) once daily for 5 days or Cefixime (200mg) or Amoxicillin Clavulanic acid combination (625mg) twice daily for 5 days.
I am a consultant Pulmonologist.
