Hi There, I Had Upper And Lower Jaw Surgery With

Question: Hi there,

I had upper and lower jaw surgery with a genioplasty in 2012 to correct what was called "long face syndrome". I had no TMJ symptoms before the surgery.

Since the surgery, I have developed jaw pain. The aesthetics of my face are greatly improved, but my bite remains quite non-functional. Of all of teeth, only my very back molars touch.

I have had a fear of developing condylar resorption since my jaw surgery because of the jaw pain and uneven bite I currently experience. I recently visited my surgeon's office to ask about the pain, and they took an X-ray which showed that my condyles are healthy.

My question is - is this pretty much a clean XXXXXXX of health in terms of my condyles? Is there any chance that my uneven bite could cause condylar resorption going forward. I am now five years post-op and 31 years old.

Thank you for your help,
Best,
Maggie

Brief Answer:
Not necessary to get the condyles resorbed..

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for writing to us.
I can understand your concern.

Well the chances of condyle resorption can occur in some cases after Surgery but it is not a mandatory thing to happen.

TMJ problem can be due to malocclusion however condyles will resorb due to it is a lesser possibility..

As it is already 5 years there is nothing to worry about it..

Thanks.

Thank you so much for your reply, Dr. Honey.

So, even though my bite is uneven, because my condyles look healthy right now and because it has been five years since my double jaw surgery in 2012, you don't think that I will get condylar resorption?

Thank you so much. And even though my bite is uneven, this won’t affect my condyles at this point?

Brief Answer:
Depends on how severe the problem is.

Detailed Answer:
Hi..

Well it is not necessary that if bite is uneven there will be condylar resorption..

So for checking about malocclusion you should get checked by an Orthodontist..

Thanks.

OK, I will do this. I know I am being annoying about this, but I get so, so nervous about condylar resorption. So you are saying that if my condyles are healthy now (five years after surgery) they will stay healthy.

Brief Answer:
Most probably..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..

Hey do not worry, you are not annoying me as I can understand your concern..

Well, condyles will be healthy but if there is any other pathology then there the prognosis can be accordingly..

As of now I do not think there is any reason for resorption..

Thanks.
