How Can I Take Care Of My Kidneys While On Omeprazole When Diagnosed With Barrett's Esophagus?

Question: I have been diagnosed over 1 1/2 years ago with Barrett's Esphogus and have been taking omeprazole twice a day prior to eating. I am concerned that it is very bad for my kidneys. My gastroenterologist says I have no other option, is this the only treatment for my condition and should I not be concerned?

I am a Gastroenterologist and would be answering your query,
Firstly PPI's can cause damage to kidney as per some researches but its really very rare and is seen after 10 to 15 years of continuous use that too in very high doses.
Practically speaking PPI's are among one of the safest class of medications available in modern medicine.
A lay mans example is omeprazole is an over the counter drug.Do you think that if kidney damage is that common then it could be a otc?
My suggestion is if you are feeling ok then continue taking omeprazole. Get a kidney function test done every year.
You can also take H 2 blockers like ranitidine but they are less potent then PPI's.
