Question: I have severe pain on the top mid section of my left foot. There is a quarter size bump which is red and slightly swollen. It has been xrayed but they came back normal. Hard to put weight on it especially in the am or after sitting.

Brief Answer:
GANGLION / TENOSYNOVITIS / GOUT

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.
I have gone through your medical history in detail.

From the symptoms i feel that there are 3 possibilities-

1.Ganglion- Its a cyst with oily thick synovial fluid inside.
2.Tenosynovitis- Swelling and inflammation of the tendon sheaths in the foot.
3.Gout- Raised uric acid levels in the blood may cause deposition of uric acid crystals in soft tissue of the foot.

Any of these will not show any positive signs on an Xray (as Xray shows only bones)

A perfect diagnosis can be made by getting a MRI of the part done. This will show the extent and the origin of the bump.Blood uric acid levels can be checked for any variations.

All these swellings are treatable and there is nothing to worry about.

Anti inflammatory fibrinolytic tablets like paracetamol, trypsin, chymotrypsin will help.
Aspiration of the bump with a local sterioid injection can be done if medicines do not help.

I hope the answer was useful.

Feel free to ask me any follow up queries that you may have.

Thank you.
Kind regards.
