How Can Abdominal Adhesions Be Treated?

default
Posted on Wed, 31 May 2017
Question: HI. I've had 7 abdominal surgeries over the past 15 years. Rectus muscle completely removed (I no longer have a belly button but did get a tattoo of a shirt button!). Some mesh was put in on right side during a particularly large hernia repair. I've have sporadic sharp pain in that region. Would this be an issue with the mesh or possibly adhesions? Can the adhesions be treated without surgery? I'm a bit weary of surgery.

I forgot to mention I have very little feeling from hip-hip across lower abdominal area. I can feel pressure but not pain. That's why this is unusual. The Rx is for muscle spasms which can occasionally lock the entire region in a massive cramp that takes a few minutes to release so I can get out of a bent forward position. I can't feel pain from the spasms just am aware when they happen (like a calf-cramp but without pain). Just curious if anything like ultrasound would help around the scar tissue, if this sounds like adhesions?

Brief Answer:
Possibly adhesions!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have reviewed this information fully. This would rather be suggestive of a possible adhesion. Unless the pain is severe, there is no reason getting worried about this. Adhesions that warrant further evaluation and management are severe and in some cases even cause intestinal blockage. This really doesn’t sound like something that you are having at this time. Also, I will not recommend any special treatment options at this time. However, should anything else come up such as increased frequency and/or intensity of pain, kindly keep me posted about this.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.

Ok, Dr. Ditah. Thank you. I wouldn't label the pain as severe just intermittent spikes of pain that grab my full attention. I'm going to increase some yoga stretches and hope for fewer episodes.

Thank you, again. Enjoy your week!
