How Can Constant Right-sided Abdominal Discomfort Be Treated?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Aug 2017
Question: I'm having some discomfort in my abdomen on the right side. Nothing terrible, nothing that wakes me up at night, just some discomfort. It's been going on for a couple of days. I've had some shoulder problems on that side (slight labral tear, arthritis) so I wonder if it's that radiating around. But of course I worry about other issues with my organs.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I can understand your concern. This is a vague symptom and if you don't mind I'd like to ask a few more questions, please.

Is that a type of discomfort related to the bowels?
Is it more like an outside, muscular pain, related to the movement?
How often do you experience this?

All the time or does it come and go?
Is it related to meals?
How are your bowel habits?
When did this start?

It may be a light muscle strain due to incorrect posture as a result of the shoulder problem.
However, in the absence of physical examination, I would need more information to guide you further.

I'll be waiting for your answers.
Wishing you all the best

Thanks. For 59 years old, I think I'm in pretty good shape. I go to the gym three or four times a week and play hockey twice a week. I have plenty of energy. My bowel movements are regular and my urine is light yellow and clear. But I also have issues with both shoulders, an artificial left hip, and osteoarthritis in both knees.

Two weeks ago, I took a couple of long car trips. When I returned, I had some pretty sharp stiffness and pain in my artificial hip area and all over my back. That took about a week to settle down. Of course I went online to self-diagnose, and quickly concluded that I had liver concern or worse (you know how that goes). Then I started noticing--or imagined I noticed--this discomfort. That was a few days ago.

It comes and goes. Much of it feels like it's muscle-related. I feel it along the ribs, up into my neck, across to my shoulder. But of course now I'm hyper sensitive so every little thing that happens I notice. Occasionally I'll have a little pinch in my gut below my ribs. Nothing that hurts much or lasts. While I was playing hockey last night, my diaphragm felt tight (but it didn't affect my energy or ability to play). Today, I'm not having anything but the usual tightness in my shoulder and upper back. Otherwise, I feel great.

Welcome back,
Thanks for the clarifications.

It does not sound like something of concern or even descriptive of a certain condition, so I wouldn't worry too much at this point.

I'd still think it is a light muscle strain. However, if you notice any new symptoms and feel something is not right, please see a doctor or come back to this forum for advice accordingly.

I hope this helps. Wishing you a good health.

Best wishes
