Question: hello, my 4 year old son is constantly sick and vomiting up phlegm nearly every week. he has chronic asthma/hayfeaver/allergies and has had grommets in his ears. he also had his tonsils and adnoids out (the adnoids partially) im wondering what could be causing the phlegm vomits and should we ask to see an immune specalist ans get blood tests? his on ventolin and flixotide. they drained half a cup of fluid from his ears when they did the grommets and his hearing has improved but there is still so much phlegm. :(

Brief Answer:
He needs investigations to know basic cause followed by specific treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for the query. I understand your concern.
Your son seems to have allergy as basic problem of his ear& throat trouble. secondary infection had set in to involve ear ... resulted in toncillar & adenoid inflammation ( they are the protective organs of body fighting out the infection... being over stressed they get inflamed & where immunity is insufficient to drive out the infection.... they remain inflamed & infected over a long period )this causes phlegm... child not being able to spit out the phlegm...he swallows it causing gastric upset... & vomiting is induced.
I would suggest to focus on his allergy & non responding infection. He would need investigations to judge the allergens & state of his immune system Also type of of infecting organism & effective antibiotic can be found out by culture & sensitivity test of the phlegm.
Please consult his ENT surgeon for the purpose ( He may take opinion of an allergy specialist/ immunologist as per need )over all evaluation from all the angles would help in decision of line of treatment.( would include specific antibiotic, anti inflammatory drug, anti allergic , Histamine blockers & steroids as per need )His asthma preventive inhalers would continue.
Please don't worry, he would be alright with expert advise.
I hope that answers your query. Any follow up question is welcome.
Thanks.
