Question: hi doctor my baby is 3 months old he cries a lot because of which we started giving him a pacifier but now I'm afraid he may develop gastric in his stomach ...will that happen and also my baby is bottle fed from the beginning so my worry is he should not develop gastric in his stomach but I give him a pacifier only to put him to sleep the moment he's put in cradle he cries .. but baby takes nap often n everytime he takes a nap he wants the pacifier is it good if I give him each time for less than 5 mins and take it out wen he catches sleep? or should even that be avoided

Brief Answer:
Proper burping needs to be ensured

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Babies often get colics especially when on formula feeds. In such a case switching back to breast milk should provide relief. You should burp the baby for at least 15-20 mins after each feed. All you need to do is to hold the baby head end elevated for this duration. The extra air taken causes distention and hence colics. Proper burping will ensure its escape and the milk will not regurgitate back from the stomach to the food pipe, thus providing relief. You can otherwise give Coliaid Drops when needed.

As such, I would speak against pacifiers since they act as potential source of introduction of infection. Rather than giving pacifier you need to increase your interaction with the baby.

Let me assure you that this is not an indication of development of gastritis, now or in the future, and so you need not worry about it.

Let me know if you have further queries.

will it be helpful if I sterilize the pacifier like everyday once for it to be infection free?

Is Aristozyne a good alternative for Colaid drops? We are giving the baby aristozyne drops at the moment?

Brief Answer:
Sterilizing it would not help

Detailed Answer:
Sorry for the inadvertent delay in responding. Unfortunately it would not be sufficient to sterilize it once a day. As you possibly understand, all the things around the baby are not sterile. The pacifier would touch here and there and you cannot sterilize it everytime it touches the surroundings. Thus it would act as a potential source of infection no matter how sincerely you try to sterilize it.

I do not think that Aristozyme would help. Colicaid would help in case the crying is due to abdominal distention.
