default
Posted on Mon, 4 Sep 2017
Question: Hi . I have experienced discomfort in my lower left side behind ribs. Hurts if I have to move my back or stretch my left arm. About three weeks ago was severe but now much less. Last week lingering at same level.
My grand kids were jumping on me about the time I noticed severe pain a few days later. I don't know if this is linked. All else is ok. Urinating fine, etc

Brief Answer:
Could be due to muscle spasm due to below listed conditions.

Detailed Answer:
Hi I am Dr Gopal Goel Orthopedic Surgeon.
In my opinion this pain could be due to
1. Dorsal Spondylosis - Pain is generally in the center but can radiate to one side.
2. Injury to ribs - very unlikely due to no such history.
3. Pain in lower ribs due to muscle pull- very common problem.
4. Cervical spondylosis- The pain may be due to muscular spasm from neck as the pain increases on moving neck or arm.
5. Pain due to kidney disease - I am not considering since urine is normal- however we need Ultrasound to exclude this possibility.
I start pain killers , muscle relaxants , Hot fomentation and local analgesic application in all my patients, Generally relief comes in 10-14 days . I also start neck and back strengthening exercises after the pain reduces.
Thanx for the question. Please feel free to ask any other question.

Hi Dr Gopel,
Thanks for speedy answer.
The pain appears to be just in line with lower ribs. My ribs are not hurting. Behind.
Acute pain only when I lift my left arm above my head. Does not hurt when moving my neck.

Can muscle relaxant be bought over counter at chemist. If so any recommendation.
Regards, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Most likely muscle pull in lower chest.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Most likely cause would be muscle sprain in lower chest or around scapular muscles.
Normally I prescribe thiocolchicoside - a muscle relaxant to my patients. Your local doctor or chemist will know the available XXXXXXX in your area.
Thanx
