Further necessary information.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Since you are a diagnosed case thus certain points are worth consideration:
1. Is macular degeneration Wet or dry or is Age-related?
PS. At her Age [63 years] Age-related macular degeneration [ARMD] seems to be the commonest.
2. Any symptoms presently affected by the disease: like blurred or distorted vision or any color confusion?
PS. visual loss caused by AMD cannot normally be reversed.
3. In Ayurveda vitiation of Vata & Pitta is the main Dosha responsible for the same, and since the constitution is also Vata-Pitta and living in Vata predominant climate, this could be the cause of aggravation.
4. Any associated risk factors like smoking, high blood pressure, family history or intense exposure to sunlight?
5. I usually recommend/Advice the following therapeutic management to my patient(s):
- Chakshushya Rasayana [Amalakai, Triphala, Saptamrit Lauha, Bhringraj]
- Bidalaka or Lepa
- Takradhara [in wet AMD]
- Shirodhara [in dry AMD]
- XXXXXXX Tarpana
PS. Include more of Vitamin A in her diet along with yellow vegetables, more of antioxidants [Vitamin E/ citrus fruits], avoid straining the eyes, and practice 'Trataka' yogic exercise daily.

Hi,
1. Although macular degeneration affects central vision while glaucoma affects peripheral vision and thus contributes to decreased vision.
2. As diagnosed with dry type thus although is more common and less severe even then ophthalmologist opinion is always welcome.
PS. dry macular degeneration can’t be cured but one can slow its progression by maintaining a healthy lifestyle:
. Quit smoking.
. Eat dark green leafy vegetables and limit the intake of refined carbohydrates.
. Keep blood pressure and cholesterol within normal range.
. Exercise regularly and maintain ideal body weight.
. Wear dark goggles outside to block and prevent sunlight that may cause eye damage.
. omega 3 [fish/fish oil supplements] are good.
. The AREDS sponsored by the Federal government’s National eye institute has found that taking high levels of antioxidants and zinc can reduce the risk by 25%, you can check for the same.
3. As she was earlier suspected to have Ulcerative colitis [UC] thus an extraintestinal manifestation of UC does affect skin, EYES, and joints.
PS. if she was treated for the same with glucocorticoids then it could be a long-term risk factor [retinal vascular disease]
PS. As there is h/o AI [autoimmune] thus consult a Rheumatologist for any associated disease condition that can affect the eye like Sjogren's syndrome, lupus, multiple sclerosis, thyroid disease
4. Without directly examining the patient, it could possibly be simple chronic glaucoma.
Hope I have answered your query.
