Brief Answer:
Muscle relaxants and physiotherapy will help.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Your have a disc prolapse with stenosis of the foramina from which nerves come out causing nerve compression. Lumbar muscle spasm is also present.
The following measures will help with the pain:
• Lie on a hard bed.
• Anti -inflammatory drugs like Tablet Motrin 1 tablet as and when required ( dont repeat a dose before 6 hours) with food.
• Avoid forward bending.
• Correct your posture while sitting
• Avoid prolonged sitting
• Avoid strenuous activity & lifting heavy weights.
• Apply diclofenac gel on the affected area. Warm compresses will also help.

- Intermittent pelvic traction might be helpful to cause a regression of the protruded disc
- After the initial pain has subsided, remedial exercises to strengthen the spine are very important to restore normal spinal movements and muscle strength. The main aim of exercise is to encourage mobility, reduce muscle spasm, prevent further deterioration in the muscles and speed recovery.
- Use muscle relaxants to relieve pain and muscle spasm, as needed. Vitamin B12 supplements & Pregabalin may be helpful in controlling the neuropathic pain.

You can get the appropriate drugs prescribed from your orthopedician after examination.

I hope this answers your query. In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out. Wishing you good health.

Dear Dr, Please let us know Prognosis? Does it require frequent hospitalization?
Will it require surgical intervention? Is it require continuous ongoing treatment? What are future complications?

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:

Hello.

There are mild degenerative changes only that usually respond to proper medicines. Regular physiotherapy prevents further deterioration and frequent hospitalization is not needed. Improvise the posture and adequate rest and exercises are needed under the guidance of a physiotherapist.

Surgical intervention is needed only if all the medical treatment fails and there is nerve root compression at multiple levels. After the acute pain subsides with medicines, only regular physiotherapy and exercises are needed.

In case the disease further progresses, nerve compression is a common complication.

Hope my answer is helpful.
