How Can Reduced Lactation Despite Taking Lactare Be Managed?
Question: hi doc.. it has been 50 days since my baby was born..since begining i have milk supply issue..till 30days we heavily relied on bottle feed for my baby.. i took lactare for 30days on docs advise but it didnt help much.. from 35th day till today I tried exclusive breastfeed on docs advise so that breastmilk supply will improve. however things have not improved much .. my baby has not passed stool for last 3 days n keep crying n keep latching to me almost 20hours a day.. Today i could not help and gave her bottlefeed again...please help me with some medication which can improve the milk supply

Before I suggest medications, I wish to revise few important aspect on lactation. Your doctors may have already explained it to you earlier.
Lactation is controlled by hormones which is regulated by demand. The more baby latches and sucks the more the milk secretion is going to be. Galactonic granules like Lactare may improve secretion. But it is important that the baby keeps stimulating for the granules to work. So keep trying to breast feed the baby once every 2-4 hours. Besides these, you should have a healthy diet with extra calories and proteins. Diets like spinach, curds and buttermilk will help.
In the meanwhile, I will recommend you to visit her pediatrician to check if there are other causes for irritability. Sometimes an abdominal colic or presence of fever can make the child irritable. It should be treated accordingly.
You may also discuss about starting domperidone tablets if it is deemed necessary. This medication is also known to stimulate breast milk secretion.
