How Can Symptoms Of ADHD In An Alcoholic Be Treated?
Question: Hi my is Nellie my question or concern is that of how is a person who is an alcoholic since 16 and demonstrates attention deficit hyperactivity disorder since childhood (undiagnosed) ...how are they diagnose and will they be on non-stimulant meds. And how does one get them to go not about the alcohol problem but adhd ?

Although with help of internet and self-help websites there is a possibility that diagnosis can be made but for confirmation, you need to see a doctor who is qualified enough to diagnose these disorders (psychiatrist, neurologist, psychologist).
Regarding treatment, adults with ADHD are offered non-stimulant medications as the first line. In case there is inadequate or incomplete response he may be put on stimulant medication as second-line treatment choice.
Regarding visiting a doctor it is important to educate the patient about their problem. It is very common to see that patient fails to recognize substance abuse in that situation any encounter with the health professional is used as an opportunity and patient is motivated for treatment. It is possible that patient may not agree to treatment at first instance, but repeated motivation often helps the individual and family members.

Thanks for your reply. But the challange. How can I get him to go without him getting defensive about the situation? I am in a recovery program from his addiction But I continue to somewhat try to arrest this two fold illness he is afflicted with and I sometimes find my self in desprate measures to find XXXXXXX for myself.

I understand that it is never easy to convince an individual who is not willing for treatment but there are some ways which can be used.
For example: if you are related to him, ask him to accompany on pretext of seeing a doctor. Before doing so the doctor/reception can be called to explain the situation in proper detail so they can handle the situation. I understand that this is some form of cheating with patient but doctor will be happy to help you in best interest of patient.
