Question: I may of eaten last night ( some 10 hrs ago) some defrosted peas or onions in a container ( uncooked) from my fridge that may of been contaminated. Now early in morning, cat woke me up, Vague non-specific symptoms in morning ( uneasiness, now some worry) but no feeling of urgency yet or nausea yet, no fever, no sweating, but some stomach gurgling and tiny hint of cramps off and on, but if early E coli, may not happen for a couple of days or so I understand. I am 75 year old male, excellent condition, excellent fitness, no medications, no former GI issues, so basically strong. Wondering what I can do now to stave off the onset? How long should I wait and see? How long before it can be said as false alarm?

Brief Answer:
You are on the onset of gastroenteritis E.coli is not the only bacteria it can be caused by a number of toxic strains.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Yes, most likely its gastroenteritis, usually gastroenteritis is by viral infection (Nova virus) and is self-limiting, but as your case is related to food intake directly it could be possible bacterial contamination. Symptoms mentioned by you are specific of ongoing inflammation in the gut. It's not a false alarm.

Best option
would suggest you go for a few tests
Ultrasound abdomen
Stool test under the microscope
Complete blood count
Total and differential leucocyte count.

However if unwilling to do so. Start taking a probiotic and take lots of fluid. For aches and cramp take tylenol. In case condition worsens get the tests done. Antibiotics would be started accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query.
