Question: I have been diagnosed with adenomyosis but I am menopausal, age 59, and have an estrogen patch amount other hormonal therapies. How common is it to have adenomyosis during menopause? Should I get a second opinion? Dr. Has recommended a hysterectomy. Will this end the extreme bloating and ovarian pain/ cramping I have been experiencing?

Brief Answer:
post menopausal syndrome with adenomyosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query,
Adenomyosis is a form of endometriosis and it grows with each menses. now that you are menopausal, the endometrial tissue embedded in the myometrium do not grow further and would tend to reduce in size with time. The adenomyosis , you have discovered now, is not as a result of or during the menopausal status, infact you have been building it up since you were on with your menses.

Adenomyosis is not an indication for hysterectomy in menopausal women , unless there are episodes of post menopausal bleeding or if any presence of thickened endometrium or endometrial hyperplasia is present. Also if the size of the uterus is so bulky or big due to adenomyosis that it is causing bladder and /or bowel symptoms- , then hysterectomy can be considered.

The bloating is part of post menopausal syndrome and should be addressed separately, isolated from adenomyosis.
i hope i have answered your query,
