How Do I Know If It Is Safe To Discontinue Advair For Asthma?

Question: I am 72 years old and had asthma as a child. It disappeared at about age 14, then reappeared at about age 45. I was treated with aggressive allergy testing and several years of allergy shots. I take Advair 100/50 twice daily. I occasionally notice some light wheezing but have had no asthma episodes for at least 17 years. The immunoligist who treated me has retired long ago and I lead an active, energetic lifestyle. Am I cured? How do I know if it is safe to discontinue the Advair? Thanks much, XXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer: Advair is a very safe medication. Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for posting the query on XXXXXXX After going through your query, I would like to comment the following: 1. You seem to be diagnosed as a case of type II diabetes with Bronchial Asthma. 2. Advair 100/50 is a minimum dose of maintenance inhaler and is not associated with any major side effects, normally. 3. You need to get your pulmonary function testing done and get evaluated by a Pulmonologist. Only a PFT will let us know the exact condition of your airways and hence needs to be done. 4. Since you do experience occasional wheezing episodes, I would advise you to continue Advair medications till you get evaluated by a Pulmonologist. I hope I have answered your query.
