Question: last night had bad XXXXXXX horse like cramp in my left calf muscle. Woke up this morning with a sensation of tightness in both calves along with a bit of soreness in left calf where spasm occurred. I have recently been put on a beta blocker could the muscle cramps be due to the medication. How do I relieve sensation of tightness. Should I be concerned about blood clots.

Brief Answer:
Hello,

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

You had a bad horse like cramps in the left calf muscle. Presently, you are having tightness in both the calves, soreness at the point you experienced horse cramp.

You have recently been put on a beta blocker. All people are different, while some experience side effects others may not.

To relieve symptoms of tightness, you are suggested to apply topical analgesic/ointment on the area affected for relieve. Keep yourself warm.

Stay well hydrated. Take water, fluids, soup, juice, beverage of your choice to help your body electrolyte system stay normal. Take home made food so that your vitals are normal.

You should always make sure that you are well fed & well hydrated while taking medicines to avoid side effects.

Beta blockers control ion (K, Na) movement between plasma & muscles thus causing symptoms like muscle fatigue, muscle stiffness, muscle cramps, pain, elevated muscle enzymes or poor blood circulation.

You are suggested to contact your treating doctor, inform him of your symptoms so that either the medicine can be replaced by another that suits you better or the doses reduced & monitored under observation.

In case, your symptoms persists or increase, it may be indicative of toxic myopathy. You should visit ER, get clinically assessed. You may need urgent medical aid.

Stay away from additions if any. Hope I have answered your question. You can contact me if needed for further assistance. Take care.
