Question: The cardiac. Doctor association just released new standards. See the comment at end of my question.., my question- how does a doctor determine the size of the opening to know if the aerobic opening is larger or smaller then reference. Size . —- new recommendations reduce the threshold for surgery for sporadic aortic root and ascending aortic aneurysms from 5.5 cm—which has been considered the standard cutoff—to 5.0 cm in select groups—-

I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

I understand your concern and would explain that the cutoff is not so important ( such difference is minimal), but the main important issue is the clinical symptomatology of the patient and the progression of the diameter of the aneurysm.

The new standards released are based on wide based studies in population and decisions for surgery are oriented on these guidelines, but in each patient the decision is individual based on his follow up and possible progression.

So, the main important issue is follow up every 6-12 months with a MRI or CT and if there is evidence of progression of the aneurysm diameter, surgery should be put into discussion.

Hope you will find this information helpful!

I have had a CAC and they provided CAC scores. ( numbers). Like 93 for left main…. And a echocardiogram.. do these of these provide information about the diameter of the opening in the artery for blood flow. I am interested in knowing if I an at a 1.5 or 2 or .5 or etc. a .5 opening.

Hello again!

The CAC score does not provide information on the aortic root caliber, while the ultrasound ( echo) may provide some information, but the CT scan and MRI are more accurate tools.

Please could you upload the echo report for me to review?

I remain at your disposal in case of further questions whenever you need!

Kind regards,

Hello again!

Unfortunately I can’t see any attachments to this question. Please try to upload again!

CT calcium scoring is a CT scan to check for deposits or build-up of plaques on the walls of your coronary arteries. It evaluates your risk for future heart attacks.

While the CT scan or MRI help examine the anatomy of the heart and blood vessels including the aorta and thus measure certain dimensions.

Hope you will find this information helpful!

Wishing all the best,
