Question: I was recently diagnosed with avascular necrosis of both hips and sent to physical therapy. In reading about the condition, I am led to believe modifying activity and taking weight off the joints is recommended. Why the therapy?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this bilateral femoral head necrosis. It is rather unfortunate that you have to deal with both at the same time.

Physical therapy often has several different indications and components. Some are geared towards identifying the best antalgic positions, how to maintain balance without putting all or excess weight on these fragile bones/joints, etc. What exercises are encouraged and carried out are greatly determined by the specific disease condition. The goal of this physical therapy must have been well spared out by your doctor and the physical therapist and the exercises carefully chosen to attain the goals.

I will like that you ask the specific question on what the usefulness and the indication of various exercises was. They should be able to provide more information to get this worry off your mind. Physical therapy has its place in avascular necrosis but what the exact exercise and goals is are determined by the specific disease findings.

I hope this helps. I wish you well and thank you so much for using our services. Feel free to ask for more information and clarification if need be.
