How Effective Is Plan-B Emergency Contraceptive In Preventing Pregnancy?

Question: Hi. I had unprotected intercourse 2 weeks ago. I took Plan B right away, within 12 hours. Around the time my menstrual period was due I experienced darker looking blood for several days. Then it progressed to lighter blood which was heavy at times. I took a pregnancy test around that time and it was negative.!" I'm concerned because I am nauseas fairly consistent. Could this possibly be pregnancy or a prolonged affect from plan b?

Thank you

Brief Answer:
You are not pregnant if your test was negative

Detailed Answer:
Hello and I hope I can help you today.

Plan B is very effective in preventing pregnancy when used correctly. One of the common side effects, however, is a change in the timing and quality of your period. Some women spot at the wrong time, some miss their menses, it varies with the timing in their cycle when they took the medicine. The fact that you got your period- even though you had slightly different symotoms, means the medicine worked and that you are not pregnant. The test you did confirmed those results. The plan B is long out of your system by now, and you are not pregnant, so there must be some other explanation for your nausea.

Many women experience pregnancy symptoms when they worry about being pregnant. And most women don't develop nausea until the second month of pregnancy. The plan B is long out of your system by now so it is not a potential cause either. So i hope you can relax now and hopefully your nausea will improve in its own.

I hope I was able to answer your question and that this information was reassuring. If you need anything further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
