How Effective Is Antibacterial Treatment In Managing Progressive MS?

Question: My daughter has progressive MS. She has seen a screening of the Catalyst programme about antibacterial treatment for MS made in August 2012. Professor R Heard of Gosford Australia and Dr XXXXXXX Wheldon of the UK support this theory and treatment in the video. I cannot find any other ongoing supporting information since . Does this treatment work and if so which doctors prescribe and support it.
My daughter lives in Brisbane, Australia.

Brief Answer:
This possibility should be tried.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.
I have read your question and understand your concerns.
Antibacterial treatment of Multiple sclerosis is a field still in study worldwide.
Clamydia pneumoniae is one of the bacteria that is accused to be related to MS ( at least some variants of MS ) by causing chronic infection.
In my opinion, this is a possibility that should be tried because of probability of improvement and minor side effects of treatment.
Offcourse tests about Clamydia infection need to be done and your daughter should discuss with a Neurologist about these issues.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Take care.

Dear Dr Spaho,
Thank you for your reply.
My daughter tells me her hospital treatment was
monoclonal antibodies mabthera therapy
Her medication is valium, Backlefin and fosamax
I have advised her to see her GP for tests for Chlamydia infection as you advised and I have printed your response for her to take to her appointment.
Is the test for Clamydia a blood test?
Would a GP be able to prescribe the antibacterial treatment or should she go to her specialist?
Regards

Brief Answer:
Blood test is one possible test about Chlamydia.
Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.
One possible way to be tested about Chlamydia is blood test with measuring antibodies against Chlamydia.
If the test results positive, in my opinion, this issue should be discussed with a Neurologist that deals frequently with MS patients in order to combine properly the treatment.
Your doughter's GP can prescribe the blood Chlamydia test.
Hope I have been of help.
Best regards.

Dr Spaho,
I agree a neurologist should oversee this protocol.
May i ask for a list of neurologists who would be involved with MS patients in the Brisbane, Queensland area of Australia who may be familiar with this treatment?
Thank you
