How Effective Is Oral Contraceptive Pill In Preventing Pregnancy?

Question: Hello I've only recently started taking the pill straight after my period and been on it for only two days. The contraception my parter used broke this morning. My doctor told me a couple of weeks ago that if I take the pill straight after my period it's effective immediately, is this true? I'm a little worried. Thanks
