How High Would Liver Enzymes Be When You Are Checking For Cirrhosis?
liver enzymes do not show if there is cirrhosis, it just shows inflammation
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
The liver enzymes can show the inflammation going on in the liver. However, it does not give any direct information about cirrhosis, if it is persistently raised than normal (normal limit depends on the lab and the unit but generally mentioned with the tests )this shows that there is some damage going on (inflammation) going on in the liver. It does not show if the liver is cirrhotic or not, but this must be investigated as later if the cause is not corrected may it lead to cirrhosis.
To know if there is cirrhosis or not, the gold standard is biopsy but that is rarely needed in this modern age because of other advanced tests e.g. a simple Ultrasound of the liver can tell if the liver is cirrhotic or not. Fibroscan is a much more advanced test to know if there is cirrhosis.
However low albumin, prolonged PT/APTT may indicate liver cirrhosis but maybe because of other causes as well.
Please let me know that what tests you have done so far, and what are the reports so that we can understand as what that indicates.
Hopes I've answered your question, I would be glad to answer any further query you may have.
Kind Regards
Dr Rahman
PT is' Prothrombin time' , APTT is 'activated partial thromboplastin time'
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
pT stand for 'prothrombin time' , while APTT stand for 'activated thrmboplatine time'. Both of these test shows the capability of our blood to clot,( that stops bleeding )
if it is prolonged then normal ,this means that our blood would not clot easily and would take more time to clot and stop bleeding.
When liver is damaged ( cirrhotic ) .This may be prolonged as the required factors are synthesized in liver ,however this is not necessary, and liver may be damaged with out it, or these may be deranged without live injury as there are other reasons for it.
Hopes it clears your query, please let me know if you want to ask anything else .
