How Is It Diagnosed Whether A Mass In The Abdomen Is A Dermoid Cyst Or Adenocarcinoma?
Question: Hi there, I'm 28 years old, I have 2 children born in 2010 and 2013 by c-section, I have a History of anemia and heavy periods. No family history of reproductive cancers. Some symptoms I've been experiencing are cramping type pain after intercourse, longer and closer together periods, feeling fuller quickly. About 6 weeks ago I noticed a mass in my lower abdomen that was more prominent when lying down. I visited my GP who sent me for an urgent ultrasound, I was then sent for a CT scan. My CA-125 levels were normal. The findings from the CT scan were as follows: there is a large predominantly central pelvis mass, measuring 150mm in its superoeinferior extent, 120mm in its maximum transverse diameter and 90mm in its maximum AP diameter. This mass has a solid component inferiorly which has areas of punctuate calcification. There are irregular cystic septations with the lesion which showed enhancement. Differential lies between cystadenocarcinoma and cystadenoma (former more likely) ive been referred to a gyno oncologist in my capital city 12 hours away and have an appointment next week. The gynaecologist at my local hospital said it was a dermoid cyst. Given the CT scan results is a dermoid cyst likely?

You have a large mass in pelvis. From the findings of CT scan nothing can be concluded about the type of the mass. This can be a dermoid cyst or adenocarcinoma also. The only way to find out the type is to get the mass removed and get a biopsy done. Since it is a large mass, its removal is necessary. The findings are more in favor of cystadenocarcinoma as it seems to be a rapidly growing mass. Do wait for your appointment and get its resection done.
