How Is Ovarian Cancer Diagnosed?

Question: 70 year old with 6x4x4cm mass on left ovary. CEA is normal. Should i have surgery or wait to see if it grows? The CT said it couldnt rule out an indolent neoplasm because the mass was there about a year ago and it hasnt significantly grown although it has grown some. since the CEA was normal should i be too awfully concerned about it?
Brief Answer:
Vary from your symptoms ...
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear and thanks for your query.
CEA is a tumor marker that is not specific for ovarian cancer ,it means that if it is within range it doesn't exclude ovarian cancer and vice versa.
Have you done Ca-125 ,because it is more specific?!
While you have an ovarian mass with those parameters and with the age increase risk of ovarian cancer, and for more CT scan doesn't exclude ovarian neoplasm better is to go for surgery.
But it vary and form the signs and symptoms you may have :
Do you have abdominal bloating or pain ?
Do you feel weak and have you lost weight?
All the best

i have not have the ca125 yet. my niece paid for me to have the cea out of her pocket because all of my sisters and brothers have died from colon lung or espophageal or pancreatic cancer. i do have weak spells that hit suddenly amd i break out in a sweat. ive lost between 10 and 15 pounds in the last few months without trying. i get full quickly and feel like I'm stuffed and then get queezy until it passes

can you tell me what you think my chances are given all the information that I've given you that this is ovarian cancer?
Brief Answer:
Explanation is given below.....
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear again!
Malignancy of an ovarian cyst is increased when :
cyst is solid mass or mix solid and liquid
have vascularization(small blood vesels)in ultrasound scan
Ca 125 is increased
age is over 60
Hence you should wait for Ca125 results .
If Ca 125 will be increased than chances are bigger to be an ovarian cancer .
But as I write above diagnosis can be done by biopsy of ovarian mass.
Hence be calm and wait for Ca 125 results.
All the best
