Posted on Thu, 4 Dec 2014
Question: Hi,
My brother age 81 had a hip replacement surgery last week. He lives in Arkansas and I live in CA. He lives by himself in the 5 bedroom 3 story house. I need to bring him here where he can stay with me and the rest of our family. I am trying to figure out when I can bring him here or how long I need to stay there first. I'm not sure about his medical coverage.

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query,

I understand you are in a difficult situation. I agree that flying is relatively contraindicated after a major surgery. He has an increased risk of blood clots after this surgery and generally these patients need to be monitored closely in rehab or with frequent clinic visits.

Perhaps there is a rehab facility which can accommodate him in Arkansas where he will be closer to his primary medical doctors and surgeon.

Other possibility would be to drive but this would likely be difficult for such a long distance.

At this time a rehab or extended care facility would be the best option versus visiting homecare. If he transfers to California his medical coverage may also be affected.

I would ask his primary doctor for names of social services resources which may be able to inform you of additional resources as well.

Sincerely,
Dr. Galamaga
