How Long After Surgery For Neuroblastoma Do Normal Bowel Movements Start?
Question: Hello Doctor,
This question is regarding my 1 yr old daughter. She is diagnosed with Neuroblastoma with a tumor in the abdominal region. For which she underwent a surgery on 14th of May. Its been a week now and her bowel movements are not back. She is still on the NG tube. We were asked to give her liquids yesterday but she had vomittings. Could you please tell me how long will it take for the bowel movement to return.

Brief Answer:
In a week or 2.
Detailed Answer:
Greetings
The recovery period is individualised. It also depends on the method of surgery. There are no watertight compartments for the same.
In general it might take about 2 to 3 weeks to recovery. You can ask the treating doctor to perform a detailed examination including assessing bowel sounds.
Hope this has helped.
thanks and regards.

Thanks for the reply doctor. She is having bowel sounds and gases some times. Treating doctor took an X-Ray yesterday and they told us that the small intestines look like sticking to each other at some parts.
Brief Answer:
Follow up.
Detailed Answer:
greetings,
what I would suggest in such a case to have a very close follow up with the treating doctor. and keeping a thorough record of any bowel movements.
sometimes post surgery such things happen but till what extent can only be commented by your treating doctor.
hope this has helped you.
a good follow up and a very thorough observation from your side will be a great idea.
thanks and regards.
