How Long After Taking Abortion Tablets Will Menstruation Begin ?

Question: Hello Doctor,

My girlfriend had her last period on 6th July, We had intercourse after that and I gave her an iPill after 30 hours of the intercourse, She missed her period and I got her to home test her pregnancy using preganews, The result was positive on the strip. I talked to a doctor and got her Mifepristone and Misoprostol Pill for Abortion, He told me how the pills were to be given to her, I gave them to her. She had the usual side effects after taking it like bleeding, nausea, headache. I got her to get the pregnancy testing strip and she checked it 2-3 times, It showed negative. It says that after taking the abortion pill the girl gets her period within 6 weeks, Now It's been 4 weeks since she took those abortion pills, she hasn't got her period, She said that she has been having cramp pain in her lower abdomen since 8-9 days and she reported increase in urination,nausea and dizziness from the past 2-3 days, but her stomach is totally normal, not bloated at all. I'm writing this as I can't really go consult some doctor and get her check up done.

I'm looking forward to hearing your response on this. Please have a look and suggest what I should do (except taking her to the doctor. *last resort*)

Thanks for your query.

Since the pregnancy test after the Abortion pill has come negative, the pregnancy could have been terminated. Also its 4 weeks to expect her next periods now.

The pain and increased urination are not good signs at this time and can indicate presence of unexpelled products of conception. Also, these could be the side effects of the abortion pill itself, due to the alteration of the uterine endometrium.

To be on safer side do get an Ultrasound scan done, If the scan shows any remnants of the conception, you must take her to gynecologist as it could evolve into life threatening infection.

Hello Doctor,

Yes, I am pretty sure she isn't pregnant and it's because of the side effect that she is seeing those symptoms.

So you think I should wait for the 5th week to end and If she doesn't get her period, I should go get her ultrasound scan done?

If by chance she is pregnant, What method will the gynecologist use to terminate her pregnancy? How long does it take?

Hi,

Thanks for writing back.

I do not think she could be pregnant after the test showed negative.

I suspect that the conception products of last pregnancy could be trapped in and not completely expelled. These could pose a risk of sepsis.

I would strongly recommend a Ultrasound scan to make sure that there is nothing left in the uterus.

Even if pregnant or the products are insitu. D and C is the only procedure how it could be removed out.
