How Long Can I Use Metrogyl During Pregnanc?

Question: I am 16weeks pregnant with a previous history of Fistula in Ano. I have again developed an Abscess and using Metrogly 400mg since 3weeks. How long can i use metrogly in pregnancy ? does this have any affect on the baby ?

I would like to know about few things in detail.
1. When was fistula surgery done in the past?
2. Presently, what were your symptoms to start with?
3. Have you taken surgical opinion about abscess?
4. Are you taking only one tablet Metrogyl on daily basis? Or any other medications?

Presently, please continue with your antenatal care with your treating gynecologist.
Please do take Iron , Calcium, protein supplements regularly.
I will suggest to add vitamin C supplements 500 mg 3 times a day for ten days, this helps to improve your immunity and healing process.

I did not have a fistula surgery done but had the abscess drained 8years ago. From then i never had any reoccurrence until recently. I currently have very little pain and the site where the previous abscess was drained is draining puss. As long as i am using Metrogly i am fine but once i stop the medication the pain comes back. I have met a colorectal surgeon and they have suggested a surgery right now which i am not comfortable with. I am taking Metrogyl 3 times a day - 400mg each.

Hi,

I will suggest you to use Lactic acid containing vaginal wash during bath time.
Please seek prescription support from your treating doctor for Tablet containing Amoxicillin and Clavulinic acid two times a day for five days.
Probiotics like Vibact DS once a day for 20 days will be of great help.
Local betaine ointment application is advisable.
Use of Metrogyl can be stopped after total ten days therapy.

Thanks Doctor. I have used Metrogyl for 10days (13, 14 week)and the doctor said can continue it for another 10days (15,16 week). She mentioned i can use it for 6moths and does not have any effect on the baby

My question is,
1. Can we use Metrogly for such prolonged period of 6months ?
2. Wanted your 2nd Opinion on having the surgery done ? is it really necessary ?

Hi,

1. In my opinion, the prolonged use of Metrogyl is not advisable.
2. Please seek the opinion of a consulting surgeon for the need to get operated.
If abscess formation has taken place and after use broad-spectrum antibiotics as suggested; if it still continues to cause problems then certainly surgical intervention is needed.
If it subsides then it can be tackled after delivery.
