How Long Do The Side Effects Of Metformin Last?

Question: I am a diabetic and have been taking Metformin for about a year and a half and recently have been taking 1000 mg. BID, and always seem to have diarrhea, I stopped, how long can the effects of drug last, secondly I had a colonoscopy 4.5 years ago, and they removed some polyps was supposed to go back at 3 years, but alas time went by and forgot, what could the chance be that the problems I am having could be colon cancer, and I also have numerous diverticula, diagnosed on CT a little over 1.5 years ago, and said colon looked fine no thickening, something about small bowel loops but cannot remember term, basically the CT was good except the sigmoid diverticulosis which was the diagnosis
