Question: CARDIOLOGY
I am 72 year old male. I had IHD in 1977, BP in 1980 and diabetes 2010.Taken Aten 50 mg for 37 years. My bp all these years is normal ranging between 110/65 to 120/80.My physician asked me to stop taking Aten and take Cresar 40 mg. Taking this medicine from 1st of XXXXXXX 2015. 22 days have passed and i observed for two days with omron and found my bp in the evening it is raising to 152/86 or 150/90 and in the morning it is 149/85. Before going to my physi i wish to know from you whether my cresar 40 mg is not enough to contain my bp and do i have to increase it to 80 mg? Actually what is the minimuum dose of telmisartan? Or on the other hand can i go back to Stamlobeta 50 mg which is always keeping my bp in control for years? kindly advise

Brief Answer:
Continue Cresor 40mg for 2 weeks and observe.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P

Cresar takes time to act at its full efficacy. Its only been 22 days since it has been started . So I advise is to hold on to it at same dose for 2 more weeks.

If after 2 weeks also your blood pressure is not coming to control then you can increase the dose of Cresor to 80mg .

The minimum dose of Telmiosartan is 20mg and maximum is 80mg .

I would not recommend you to go back to Stamlobeta as there must be some reason why it was changed to Cresor( It was changed inspite of your BP being in control ) Also frequent changes in BP medicines causes problem.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .

Regards.

Dear Doctor Dwaraka,
namaste. You have answered one of myy earlier questions on 17th December. now the attending physician asked me to shift from Stamlobeta to Cresar 40 mg because he told me that since i have diabetes in 2010, Cresar will take care of the kidneys also , and long usage of aten also may induce diabetes, as myy fasting gluucose is always between 10 and 125.Thats why he has changed it.As you said i shall follow your advise. If possible kindly refer my 17th dec question.with regards

HI

I went through dec 17th query, I had advised you to get Serum Potassium levels checked kindly get it done .

Your Physician is right , Telmisartan is good for diabetics and for kidneys also.

Follow my advise and revert back if BP is persistently high.
