How Long Does Cirrhosis Take To Develop In Body?
Question: Hi,
How long does cirrhosis take to develop in individuals that have hemochromatosis? I have read that most people at the time of diagnosis are over 40 years of age. I recently got a blood test done which showed elevated iron levels. Doctor sent me for a second blood test. Im 20 years old. Although I didnt really have any symptoms. I have been reading about cirrhosis and have been panicking quite a bit. I also have anxiety issues. She said at such a young age I should not worry about cirrhosis and be thankful that they found out so early (although it hasn't been confirmed yet). Any thoughts on this?

Brief Answer:
Time for development of cirrhosis cannot be predicted, tt can avoid cirrhosis all together.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
It is difficult to predict when hemochromatosis will lead to complications like cirrhosis.
If the disease is untreated, the disease will lead to cirrhosis and this will depend on the rate of accumulation of iron in liver.
However, when the disease is treated and a regular follow up is done to monitor the status of liver, cirrhosis can be avoided all together and you can have a normal life expectancy like normal population.
If you have more concerns, I will glad to answer.
Thanks and take care
