How Long Does Immunity Last After Receiving Tetanus Toxoid Injection?

Question: Hi, This* (i.e., what is bracketed withing square quotes), copied and pasted from the email I sent myself, should explain the background to my question. Please read it ALL BEFORE replying. I went to another CVS the afternoon of the injury, and the pharmacist there gave me a Tdap injection and flu shot. Basically, my question is do I need MORE tetanus toxiod RIGHT NOW for this injury? The pharmacist who administered the injections suggested I see a doctor and perhaps "...get a tetanus toxoid shot." By the way, I do not have any insurance so cost is VERY much a factor. *[F23Dec2016 ~8:00 AM - Stepped on that darn rusty screw sticking up from floor in master bedroom. Bled wound a few drops, Googled tetanus and Tdap vaccine (i.e., http://www.msema.org/free-tdap-vaccinations-available-at-health-departments/, "Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) vaccinations are available at all county health departments...") and scheduled earliest available CVS/pharmacy/minute clinic (https://flushot.cvs.com/CVSApp/appointmentSelectionAction.do?method=appointmentSelection) appointment (i.e., U25Dec2016, 10:00 AM) for Flu Shot, Td (Tetanus booster) & Tdap (Whooping Cough) vaccinations. NOTE - I would have also checked Chickenpox (Varicella) but that option changed the earliest available to R29Dec2016! Lol ] Thank you.

Here is what CVS's Tdap paperwork says was administered: "Date: 12/23/2016, DAW: 0, ADACEL TDAP VIAL, SANOFI-PASTEUR, NDC:49281-0400-10, Days Supply: 1, Refills: 0, Qty:0.5 ml"

Not sure, but think I had a tetanus booster "2006ish" and have been doing a lot of construction all this year with multiple cuts and scrapes, splinters (that I simply removed and let bleed as much as possible), etc. Covered with masking or painter's tape (i.e., works MUCH better that band aids! Lol) if wound hurt or interfered with continued construction progress. None became inflamed and all healed quickly. Last splinter was last week.

Brief Answer:
You don't need additional tetanus toxoid now!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

After 5 tetanus vaccines, you are protected for life. Your history sounds like you have been receiving multiple doses with a last one about 10 years ago. From this information, there is no reason to get worried about a possible tetanus infection as you are well covered.

Keep me posted and I wish you a happy holiday season and quick recovery.

Here's a picture I just took of the wound site. Location: center of left heel. The small black spot is where the screw went in. The screw was sticking out of the floor (...I grabbed the 4 1/2 inch grinder and dispatched it quickly!! Lol) about 1/4 inch, but I don't think it went in that far because I felt it and immediately removed my weight from that foot. But it did break the skin, and like I mentioned before I immediately bled it as much as I could but only 2 or 3 drops of blood came out before it clotted up.

Uploaded that pic and sent last message before realizing you had replied 5 min. earlier. Lol Thanks, and Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to you and yours, also. ;-) :-D
