How Long Does It Take One To Recover From Thyroid Removal Surgery?
Question: how long after hyperthroid surgery does it take for the brain to return to normal? meaning thought process anxiety confusion no appetite no energy. it has been over a month and calcium levels were at normal in 1 week.
Brief Answer:
Thyroid
Detailed Answer:
Once the thyroid is removed surgically, then improvement starts within days and by the end of couple weeks one should expect considerable improvement. Within 4 to 6 weeks there should be no excess thyroid hormone in the blood. On the contrary, thyroid hormone replacement needs to be initiated if the entire thyroid gland was removed. This is typically commenced immediately after surgery ie from the very next day.
When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:
CBC
Electrolytes
Calcium
HbA1c
Liver function tests
Kidney function tests
TSH
Free T4
25 hydroxy Vitamin D
