Question: I want suggestion from orthopedic specialist for this query.

Hi Doctor
My mother aged 67 (Non diabetic and No BP, no joint pain)have been diagnosed with osteoporosis in bone density test with score of -5.30 (speed of sound 1432 m/sec) and have been suggested to excess intake of calcium .
knowing the fact that
Bone development not only needs calcium but potassium, magnesium collagen (30 to 40%) and other minerals.Excess calcium leads to deposition in arteries which leads to heart issues as calcium cannot be thrown out of body as compared to potassium or magnesium.
So being vegetarian decided to overcome or reverse issue naturally by constant intake of
1. Finger millet daily 100gm which contain highest calcium when compared, and contains potassium and magnesium.
2. For Calcium to absorb it is know only thru Vit D decided to have VitD3+Vitmin K2(MK 7) natural supplement after food.
3. Amla powder early morning which contain Vit C(as pro-collagen) .
4. Increasing usage of Vegi and fruits .

Here are four questions that needs answer
1. How long does it take to reverse osteoporosis with above medication?
2. Is the above medication sufficient to reverse osteoporosis ?
3. Does above method has any defects to reverse osteoporosis ?
4. How long VitD3+Vitmin K2(MK 7) natural supplement should be taken on daily basis?

Brief Answer:
It can prevent further deterioration.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us.
I have read your query carefully and will try to answer to the best of my knowledge.
1. Reversal of osteoporosis completely is less likely. With the help of medicines we try to prevent further deterioration. The response to medicines of every individual is different depending on the extent of absorption and response of the body, type of activities and wear and tear. Usually the deterioration can be stopped with 3-4 months of regular medicines. If the response is not seen with calcium and other mineral supplements then hormonal therapy and bisphosphonates are given after careful monitoring.
2. Complete reversal is not possible. Usually further deterioration can be prevented. Other medicines are also needed in severe and symptomatic cases. The treatment recommended to your mother is just a basic first line treatment. In case of symptoms other medicines are needed under strict medical supervision.
3. I have explained already that reversal is not likely.
4. Depends on the dose she is taking. Natural supplements usually are for daily supplementation. In case of treatment higher therapeutic doses are needed as recommended by your doctor. Your orthopedician can guide you regarding this after doing tests every 2-3 months.
Hope this answer is helpful.
Regards.
