How Long Does Recovery From A Oral Thrush Take?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 May 2016
Question: I took Microbid for a UTI in January. A week later, I got really bad oral thrush that I let go for two weeks. My mouth burned, hurt and it was very hard to swallow. I was given Nystatin Oral Suspension and took that for 5 days. It did not go away, but was a little better. In the meantime, I got bronchitis and was given steroid pack, two IM doses of Rocephin and a z-pack. I responded well to that for the bronchitis, but then got a resurgence of my oral thrush. I was given Clorotrimazole troches for 10 days. It has cleared up the thrush, but my mouth is still sore and my tongue is burning. I have also been nauseated and have not felt well since this all began, particularly in the last ten days. I think the Clorotrimazole has caused the mucosa to be irritated in my mouth and caused me to not feel well. I have complete that medication now. How long do you think it will take for my mouth and tongue to recover.

Brief Answer:
Start probiotic intake.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Taking so many antibiotics you have caused kind of destruction of natural bacteria in your mouth and intestines (as well as in the vagina). This bacteria protect us against bad bacteria and fungi.
As a result of this treatment you have developed fungal infection in the mouth and probably in the intestines as well. As long as you wont restore the natural intestinal bacteria, the mouth wont get back to normal.
Saliva contains some growing factors which cause accelerated healing in the mouth (like when you bite your mouth inside, it does not stay injure for a long time, usually it takes few days).

As a conclusion, you should start probiotic intake, yogurt intake. This should solve the issue in a week or so. If not, please consult gastrologist.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
